The Farewell Sermon - Muhammad

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Farewell_Sermon

Audience - The Muslim people (specifically those on pilgrimage in 632 AD)

WATCO - obeying Allah's commands received through Muhammad?

Goal - To convince the people to continue to obey and follow Allah's commands which they have received through Muhammad.

How and STAR
Ethos - Muhammad is the prophet of the Islamic faith. He automatically has authority given to him from Allah. However, Muhammad still quotes Allah, and His will to the Islamic people of that time. This creates a lot of appeal to the people, being able to know the will of their God. By doing this, Muhammad creates more trust and more credibility for his people.
S - These people where expecting something to come from Muhammad, and he gave them everything that he felt necessary to leave with them. He had left many manuscripts, which were then compiled into the Qur'an. For him to say something, it is enough that it is asked to his people, because he is the prophet of their god. So for his audience, Muhammad provided sufficient explanation.
T - Any practicing Muslim would believe and heed the words of the prophet Muhammad. There is no doubt that this is something a normal Muslim would believe. The fact that it is Muhammad speaking automatically means that it is the prophet's voice and it should be heard.

Effective - This was incredibly effective for the first few years after Muhammad's death, however it was soon forgotten, and the people began to fight amongst themselves again.
So for those there at the speech, yes it was very effective, for those not present at the speech, it was not so effective. Sometimes this happens to speeches, where when you hear it you are moved much more than when you read it. Voice can sometimes do something that the written word cannot convey.

Black Or White (Music Video)

Source: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d99bcQaH6ts

WATCO:Judging people on their color?

Audience: Those who would judge someone based on their skin color

Goal: To show that there is no difference between people of different skin types

How and STAR:
Pathos - There are people of all color and races used to show how we can all get along
T - This argument is typical, because by showing that all people can get along, show that we are not so different from each other.
A - There is no where that he decides to change his argument, or to quote people incorrectly

Effective - It is effective, especially since someone as famous as Michael Jackson is singing it. It shows that despite our obvious skin tone differences, we are all brothers and sisters.

Resource for Paper B

Source: Gardner, Marilyn. 1999. "A Generation of Hothouse Flowers." Christian Science Monitor. Vol. 91: 184. pg 15.

WATCO: over-protecing children on their ability to grow up in a healthy atmosphere.

Audience: Parents of school aged children/ School administrators

Goal: To convince parents and school administrators that too much protection is not healthy (mentally, emotionally or physically) to the growth of school children.

How and STAR:
Logos: The author uses studies done by other known organizations like NSPCC and Children's Play Council.
T: This argument appeals to parents and school administrators alike because it show concern for the development of children.
R: The article is directed at those who care about the development of school aged children.

Effective: I think it is partially effective that it convinces that some degree of responsibility needs to happen. However, if it is trying to convince the reader to dramatically decrease this protection I think most parents are not going to, especially because of all the media coverage.

I know this has nothing to do with anything, other than I thought it was cool. Enjoy.

Pre-flight Safety

WATCO: listening to the pre-flight safety instructions on your ability to survive an emergency landing.

Audience: Those who fly in airplanes, specifically over large bodies of water

Goal: To get people to listen to the pre-fligt instructions, even when they have heard them a hundred times.

How:

S - It is sufficient in that it shows a large number of people standing outside of a sinking plane without a life raft or any other form of safety
T - A sane person who has ever flown in an airplane might rethink reading the magazine or listening to their favorite tunes instead of listening to the flight attendant.
A - Though crashes or emergency landings are rare, they do occur. So by saying that listening to the flight attendent's instructions are important with a picture of a lot of stranded people is accurate.

Effective: While it is a very sturring picture to see people who, without a quick response, will probably drown and die. However, most people will still think to themselves, "oh, it will never happen to me." That would be nice, but I am sure some of those people standing there thought the same thing.
